More About Dentures

If you have lost teeth due to diseases, accidents or poor oral health, you may be able to replace them with dentures. Dentures are natural-looking replacements for your teeth and gum. They are a custom-made and comfortable remedy to partial or complete teeth loss.

Made from hard-resin, porcelain or plastic, dentures have supporting structures that hold the artificial replacement in place. Together, they improve your smile, allow for easy chewing and maintain the structure of your mouth, cheek and lips.

Depending on each individual patient case, they may receive full or partial dentures. Full dentures are used when all of the natural teeth are removed from the mouth and replaced with a full set of dentures. There are two types of full dentures:

  • Conventional Full Dentures – This is when all the teeth are removed and the tissue is given time to heal before the dentures are placed. It could take a few months for the gum tissue to heal completely, and during this time you will be without teeth.
  • Immediate Full Dentures – Prior to having your teeth removed, your dentist takes measurements and has dentures fitted for your mouth. After removing the teeth, the dentures are immediately placed in your mouth. The benefit is that you do not have to spend any time without teeth. You will, however, need to have a follow-up visit to refit your dentures because the jaw bone will slightly change shape as your mouth heels. The dentures will need to be tightened after the jaw bone has healed.

Partial dentures are another option when not all of your teeth need to be removed. This is similar to a bridge, but it is not a permanent fixture in your mouth.

Common Questions

How long will my dentures last?

There are several factors that will affect the lifespan of your dentures. They will wear down and become discolored with use and age just like natural teeth. Your mouth will also change as you age, and your dentures may need to be refitted from time to time in order to match your mouth shape. In general, most people can expect to wear a set of dentures for 5 to 7 years before they need to be replaced.

Will I be able to eat normally with dentures?

It will likely take you some time to adjust to chewing and eating with your new dentures, but over time you should be able to eat most foods normally. Always check with your dentist if any foods are causing you discomfort while chewing or if you are unsure of whether or not you should eat something.
